With Sunderland’s main aim this season no doubt trying to get back to the Championship, a significant run of victories is needed. And on Saturday afternoon against Lincoln City, the Black Cats picked up a comfortable 3-1 win, with a blistering first-half performance seeing them go three goals ahead at the break.

And one man who certainly enjoyed an impressive display at the Stadium of Light, was Chris Maguire. The 30-year-old has been a key part of Sunderland’s squad this season, making 27 appearances across all competitions, and finding himself playing in a variety of different positions. As per Transfermarkt, the Scot has found himself in attacking midfield, right-wing, second-striker, left-wing and at centre-forward too.
Against Lincoln, Maguire was deployed out wide on the right, and his tenacious display caused the visitors all sorts of problems. As per Sofascore, he won two duels and made one tackle, whilst also providing the assist for Tom Flanagan’s opener. After seeing his performance, Sunderland fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the ace.
A couple of fans were quick to point out how Maguire appeared to look fitter than usual, and hailed his intent in trying to press the ball.
Another couple of Sunderland supporters compared Maguire to Aiden McGeady who appears to be on his way out of the club, with one fan in particular suggesting that the 30-year-old might be better without having the latter around.
With McGeady potentially being out of the picture in the long-term, Maguire could be one man to really benefit. More responsibility will fall on his shoulders, and he may even nail down a permanent spot in the team rather than floating around wherever he is needed. He may not have gotten on the score-sheet against Lincoln, but he proved he can be a massive influence for Phil Parkinson for the remainder of this campaign.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are planning a loan move for this ace from the Championship.
