Rangers could launch a late move for Aston Villa outcast Ross McCormack, according to The Daily Record.
What’s the word?
After starting the new season in stunning form, Steven Gerrard has encountered an issue with Rangers sweating over the fitness of Jamie Murphy, fearing he could miss up to nine months if he has sustained cruciate ligament damage.
The 28-year-old winger was stretchered off during his side’s 3-0 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday after awkwardly twisting on the artificial turf at Rugby Park, with the club waiting for the swelling to subside before sending him off for scans.
Gerrard has admitted that his hand could now be forced in the transfer market and The Daily Record states a move for Ross McCormack is being considered, with the club looking at signing at least two new faces before next Friday’s transfer deadline.
32-year-old McCormack, a graduate of Rangers’ academy, has fallen out with Steve Bruce at Aston Villa and has been told he will play no part in the club’s promotion push this season after spending last term on loan with Australian side Melbourne City.
Time to make a move?
With injury issues mounting for Gerrard, signing an experienced striker could ease the pressure on the squad over the course of the coming weeks but wages may prove to be an issue – as the report adds McCormack is currently on £40k-a-week at Villa Park.

Sunderland and other English sides are interested in a deal, which could drive up Villa’s demands, but McCormack may be keen on a return to familiar surroundings after leaving Glasgow in 2006 for Motherwell, then moving to England in 2008.
With 14 goals in 16 appearances for Melbourne last season, McCormack has certainly not lost his talent in front of goal and would prove to be a strong acquisition for Gerrard’s side, crucially providing a wealth of experience to the attack.
