Inconsistent or not, Portsmouth are still well in the hunt for promotion into the Championship this season. Never ones to do things easy, Pompey must be one of the most frustrating teams in the country support. Still, with so much still to play for, the South Coast outfit could yet be on the rise.
Indeed, with a Wembley trip soon to occur, Pompey will be hoping for another trip there in a few months time via the play-offs.
The collapse has been disappointing since the turn of the year but Portsmouth still have the quality to revive their fortunes. A turnaround in form must be quick but, with the chance to be back in the Championship again next season, surely that’s all the ambition they need.
Following recent investment, it’s a necessity if this project is ever going to get off the ground.
One player who is currently used to playing in the second division is Swansea striker Courtney Baker-Richardson, someone who could be of great interest to the Fratton Park side, whether they go up or not.
Baker-Richardson, (who is valued at £225k on Transfermarkt) has successfully battled his way through the lower leagues in England to get where he is today. The 23-year-old has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three times whilst assisting one goal as well.
Whilst Portsmouth already have a number of proven goalscorers on their books, two will be returning to their parent clubs, with the potential for more to follow them out the door as well. That’s planning, right there.
A club like Pompey need to be prepared and although Baker-Richardson is yet to set the world on fire at Swansea, he has the right attributes to be the star they’re surely crying out for.
From humble beginnings, the 23-year-old could make a real name for himself at Fratton Park, with a full stadium of fans cheering his name.
With experience of the Championship plus lower leagues, Courtney Baker-Richardson may just be the man for Portsmouth.
